These links are NOT paid advertisements!  These are just great places to go and fun things to do within a day's drive of Seymour, TX.
SCOUT CAMPS AND FACILITIES
Camp Simpson - This camp is run by cousins of Dr. Rose. It is a nice place to camp for a weekend. Small Summer Camp program offered as well.  Very close to the Back Cat Mountain trilobite fossil quarry.
Camp Perkins is the local Northwest Texas Council camp.  Located just a few miles North of Wichita Falls and just East of Burkburnett
Camp Tonkawa - Near Abilene, TX and part of the Texas Trails Council.  Nice place for weekend camping or Summer Camp. Good place for adult training too.
Diamond H Scout Ranch in located in Northeastern Oklahoma near Lake Tenkiller.  This is 100% primitive camping in a beautiful area. Support for Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts. This aint fer no sissies.
Hale Scout Reservation - A wonderful camp for Boy Scouts of all ranks. Located in the Kiamichi mountains near Talihina, Oklahoma. Troop 71 loves this camp!
The National Scouting Museum is in Irving, TX.  You can earn mert badges and train as well as enjoy the history of the BSA.
arrowhead Philmont - This is the premier backpacking experience for Scouts and Scouters.  You cannot do better than Philmont for adventure.
Sid Richardson Scout Ranch (SR2) - Big, fun and big fun. Excellent for training, Summer Camp and weekend camping.
Slippery Falls Scout Ranch - Near Tishomingo, OK. Programs for Cubs, Boys and Ventures.  Equipped for training, Summer Camp and weekend camping.
Wehinahpay Mountain Camp - A fantastic Summer camp. Home of O.A. Kwahadi Lodge #78.  Dr. Rose spent much of his Boy Scout years here.  Lots of Trout and no mosquitoes! The Ordeal ring is awe inspiring!
STATE AND NATIONAL PARKS
Carlsbad Caverns - Some of the largest caves in North America. Located in far Southeastern New Mexico, near White Sands National Monument, it offers Scouts and Scouters life long memories.  You can do a variety of climbs from easy to difficult.
Copper Breaks State Park is just North of Crowell, TX.  It is a very good place to go during cool and cold weather.  The dark winter skies are great for astronomy.
Dinosaur Valley State Park - Near Glen Rose, TX and Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. Real dinosaur footprints well preserved in limestone.  Call first to be sure that the water level is low enough to see most of the tracks. It is really amazing to literally walk in the footsteps of giant therapods and saurapods.
Palo Duro Canyon is a beautiful North Texas canyon flush with wildlife and rich in history.  Located near Amarillo, TX, it is close to Seymour and well worth the short trip.
USS Lexington - Moored in Corpus Christi Bay, TX. This famous aircraft carrier is open for tours and over night stays. Beware of ghosts!
USS Texas - The Battleship Texas is permanently anchored on  Buffalo Bayou of the busy Houston Ship Channel.  Open for tours and overnight stays.  I bet it has ghosts too!
White Sands National Monument - Close to Carlsbad, NM and Carlsbad Caverns in Southeastern New Mexico.  Stark beauty. Lots of fun.  Not far from White Sands Missle Range.
GENERAL ACTIVITIES AND MUSEUMS
The 45th Infantry Division Museum in Oklahoma City is a fun place to take Scouts to see retired armor and war memorabelia. Plan to be there 2-4 hours
The Abilene Zoo - On the West side of Abilene, TX. This is a nice little Zoo that can keep your Scouts occupied for 2-4 hours. Not far from Camp Tonkawa on the outskirts of Buffalo Gap, TX.
The Air Tractor plant in Olney, TX is a busy operation manufacturing quality crop dusters used world wide.  They are open for scheduled tours and are very fun to deal with.
sb-logo.gif The Alamo - This is Holy ground to all Texans.  You cannot help but be humbled when you cross the threshold and step back into history.  There is no shame in shedding a tear.
Black Cat Mountain Trilobites - This is the largest Trilobite fossil bed in North America.  Just North of Bromide, OK and close to Camp Simpson and Slippery Falls Scout Ranch.  Nice folks who will show you their operation and let you hunt for surface specimines. There is a rich population of Mountain Boomers (Oklahoma State reptile) at the quarry and many are easy to photograph.
Comanche Springs Astronomy Campus - Just a short drive West of Crowell, TX.  No light pollution and big open West Texas skies.  Add this to good old fashioned Texas hospitality.  This makes for a wonderful outdoor astronomy experience.  Over night camping is available.
Dallas World Aquarium - Like a giant biodome.  Lots of cool land and aquatic flora and fauna.  Spend about 3-4 hours on a nice self-guided tour.
Fort Worth Museum of Science and History - Lots of fun and educational activities.  Has a tremendous Imax theater.
The Fort Worth Zoo - This is a large and fun zoo.  You can easily spend 6-8 hours here.  They have pretty much everything you could want to see.
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center - Close to Glen Rose, TX and Dinosaur Valley State Park.  Scout-friendly allowing for group tours for your Pack, Troop and Crew.  Big fun if you like animals great and small.
H&H Gun Range - Located in Oklahoma City, this is a terrific Scout-friendly place to shoot, shop for firearms and teach shooting.  Very inexpensive as Scouts are not charged to shoot. Just pay for any firearm rentals, ammo and targets.  They have a large classroom suitable for training youths and adults.  Nice BB gun range for the Cubs as well.  You can bring your own firearms, but please have the ammo inspected at the desk before shooting (no steel jackets or cores allowed).
The Oklahoma City Zoo - A nice zoo where you can spend about 4-6 hours to see lots of critters.
Red River Renegades - Black powder shooting in Electra, TX.  Nice people and lots of fun!
Rocktown - Located in downtown Oklahoma City's "Bricktown" area.  This is a fun place to learn to rock climb.  Here is our climb from  18 Sep 2010. The outdoor top climbs are 80 feet high!  There are several smaller climbs inside and outside with a variety of skill levels available.  Fully equipped and nice instuctions.  Must be at least 14 years old to belay, but any age can climb.
Science Museum Oklahoma - Located in Oklahoma City.  Fun place for science exploration.  Plan about 4 hours to tour.
Science Spectrum - Located in Lubbock, TX.  Has a nice Omni theater and is reasonably close to Seymour.
Space Center Houston - Located in Houston, TX.  Make advance reservations to spend the night in the Space Center.  Programs for all ages of Scouting.
